RCMP provided preliminary details late Saturday night, saying a man was ultimately shot and killed by police, and that the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) had assumed part of the investigation.

In a release Monday, ASIRT offered more details about what led to the man’s death.

ASIRT says it was the evening of Aug. 13 when RCMP became involved in what started as an investigation into an alleged armed carjacking earlier that day in Parkland County. During that incident, a GMC truck was stolen, they say.

Police identified a 39-year-old man as the suspect, with officers eventually connecting the man to a homicide in the capital.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 14, the man repeatedly contacted police, according to ASIRT, and advised the authorities that he was in possession of a weapon and had a hostage. As these communications took place, police efforted to locate the man and the stolen vehicle from the alleged carjacking.

The truck was located, and at 7:43 a.m., it was cleared by police. A police service dog then tracked the occupants to a nearby outbuilding at an oilfield battery site west of Rocky Mountain House.

Police determined the man was inside, however it was unclear if there was anyone else with him. Members believed the man to be armed, ASIRT notes.

The scene was contained while negotiators attempted to persuade the man to surrender peacefully.

Then, at 1:30 p.m., the man came out and allegedly initiated a confrontation with police, ASIRT saying that one officer ultimately fired his service weapon which fires ‘less than lethal’ rounds.

Other officers also fired their service weapons, ASIRT says. The man sustained critical injuries and fell to the ground. Medical intervention was attempted but was unsuccessful in keeping the man alive.

Police are said to have cleared the scene and determined the man was in fact alone. They also recovered a 12-gauge pistol grip pump-action shotgun, as well as live and spent shotgun ammo.

ASIRT says all of the events leading up to the eventual death of the man are being investigated by police services in each respective jurisdiction. ASIRT’s focus is related to the containment and use of force.

In the RCMP’s initial release, it was noted that the homicide in Edmonton the man is believed to have been involved in resulted in the death of a female in the area of 93 Street and 111 Avenue.
