No charges laid in fatal shooting west of Red Deer

The RCMP’s Major Crime’s Unit has completed its investigation into a fatal shooting west of Red Deer on Monday.

After consultation with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office, Mounties say the decision was made that charges will not be laid.

As the substantive investigation is complete, the following details are now being shared by police:

On Aug. 2, at 3:11 p.m., Blackfalds RCMP were dispatched to a break and enter in progress off of C & E Trail in Red Deer County.

As officers were enroute, updates were received that one male was injured and bleeding, and another had been shot.

Officers arrived on scene and found the homeowner was suffering from injuries, and a deceased male in the residence with a gunshot wound.

Witnesses reported that the homeowner had arrived home and found the intruder sleeping in the residence. A confrontation then occurred in which the intruder struck the homeowner numerous times with a baseball bat. During the attack, the homeowner was able to retrieve a firearm and fatally shot the intruder one time.

The homeowner, meanwhile, was treated for injuries he sustained and has been released from hospital.

RCMP say no further updates are anticipated at this time.
