Two Red Deer Rebels were selected in this weekend’s 2021 NHL Draft.

Centre Jayden Grubbe is now a part of the New York Rangers organization after being selected with that team’s first pick, 65th overall.

The Calgary kid has seven goals and 32 assists in 62 career games since being taken by the Rebels seventh overall in the 2018 WHL Draft.

Grubbe was named Rebels captain last March at just 17-years-old, and played six games before going down with a knee injury. That caused him to miss the rest of the already shortened season.

The first Rebel ever to be selected by the Rangers, he’s said to be well on the road to recovery.

Meantime, d-man Kyle Masters was selected 118th overall by the Minnesota Wild.

In 44 career games, Masters has amassed two goals and 11 assists. The Edmontonian was taken 16th overall by the Rebels in 2018.

Masters is the son of former Rebel Kevin Masters, who played in Red Deer during the team’s inaugural season in 1992-93.

He is the second Rebels player to be drafted by Minnesota after Matthew Dumba went seventh overall in 2012.

Grubbe and Masters are two of 33 WHL players taken in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Among others, Talyn Boyko, a goalie from Drumheller who plays for the Tri-City Americans, was also taken by the New York Rangers.
