Two Lacombe residents win Hospital Lottery dream home and Mega Bucks 50/50

The Red Deer Regional Health Foundation made a number of people very happy on Friday as it drew the winners of its annual Hospital Lottery.

The dream home at 101 Larratt Close in southeast Red Deer is worth nearly $900,000 and was built by Sorento Custom Homes. That prize comes with $10,000 cash, with the home including four bedrooms, three full baths, a home gym/playroom, and furnishings from The Brick.

A winner was also drawn for the Mega Bucks 50/50 jackpot, which came out at nearly $823,000.

“Our 2021 Hospital Lottery was extraordinarily successful, despite the challenges faced by Albertans” said Manon Therriault, Foundation CEO. “We sold over 90 per cent of (195,000) lottery tickets. We are very grateful for the support we received this year.”

2021 Red Deer Hospital Lottery proceeds will be used to purchase electronic fetal monitors for the Red Deer Hospital Centre and other healthcare centres in Central Zone.

The winner of the dream home, announced Friday, is Ross Drummond of Lacombe. Drummond says his wife and two young kids will absolutely be moving in.

“I’ve processed it, sort of, but it’s still not really real, said Drummond over the phone to rdnewsNOW. “To be honest, the main reason we buy the ticket is to win, but of course living in the Red Deer area, it seemed normal to support a local cause. I’ve used that hospital my whole life so that’s also a good reason.”

50/50 winner Frank Nobel, who’s also from Lacombe, is taking home more than $411,000.

“I support a lot of these types of causes. There are about five or six of them, and I’ve bought tickets for years. I never expect to win and this is the first time I’ve won anything on one of them, if it’s all true of course,” says Nobel, who turns 73 this Sunday,” he says.

“When I heard the call, I thought, ‘Is this for real?’ I’m still kind of in disbelief.”

Nobel is retired, so what comes of his winnings is to be determined.

“I thought about it after the Foundation called me,” he says, adding, “I’m a Christian, so I prayed and asked what I should do with it.”

Each year there are over 2,700 births at RDRHC alone, say Foundation officials, and electronic fetal monitoring is performed multiple times during pregnancy, labour, and birth to assess the baby’s wellbeing.

Currently, fetal heart rate tracings are captured through bedside monitors that print paper records and can only be viewed while at the machine. The ability to quickly review, assess, and interpret records is important, say Foundation officials.

New technology monitors will digitally record the unborn baby’s heartbeat, allowing the information to be viewed by both onsite and offsite healthcare professionals in real time.

Lottery officials say they are excited to announce this year’s winners, and proud to provide funds for healthcare through the generous support of ticket buyers and the volunteers who work to make the lottery possible.
