The Central Zone as a whole has 79 active cases, down seven from Tuesday, and 16 hospitalizations, the same as yesterday, including one in the ICU at Red Deer Regional Hospital, also flat from Tuesday. There have now been 171 deaths in the zone linked to COVID-19, with none reported in the last day.

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

The government announced Wednesday that now more than half of eligible Albertans (ages 12+) are now fully vaccinated.

Alberta has delivered 4,673,582 vaccine doses as of July 6. 73.6 per cent of Alberta’s eligible 12+ population has received at least one dose (62.6% total population) and 50.7 per cent are fully vaccinated (43.1% total population).

In Red Deer, 59,450 (64.9% of eligible) people have received at least one dose, while 43,790 (47.8%) are fully vaccinated with two doses.

“COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective and can be used interchangeably for adults,” says Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw. “It is important for Albertans to get the added protection of a second dose for themselves and those around them. Please take the earliest second-dose appointment available, regardless of brand.”

Adds Premier Jason Kenney: “Thank you to the 2.8 million Albertans who have done the right thing by sticking it to COVID. Thanks to their diligence, we have been able to open for summer. As our vaccination rate continues to climb, so does the prospect of Alberta being open for good. Let’s keep up the great work to keep our families, our communities and our province safe.”

Meantime, across the province, Alberta reported 67 new cases on Wednesday out of 6,162 test results for a positivity rate of ~1.1 per cent.

Active cases are down 18 to 745.

There are 140 Albertans in hospital because of COVID-19, up two from Tuesday, and 30 in intensive care, down two.

The province’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 is now 2,307 after two more fatalities were reported Wednesday.
