Stampede Fireworks Spectacular coming to Red Deer

Jul 5, 2021 | 10:30 AM

The Calgary Stampede is coming to Red Deer… sort of.

Stampede organizers have announced their plan to light up the night sky across Alberta with a Fireworks Spectacular in various cities.

The pyrotechnics are all scheduled for July 9 in Red Deer, Lethbridge, Edmonton and Calgary. They will be identical in each city.

“This is our way of lighting up the Alberta skies and providing the opportunity to celebrate together,” says Steve McDonough, President & Chairman of the Stampede Board. “Thousands of Albertans will be able to view this amazing firework show from their own neighbourhood at the same time, with the same soundtrack on July 9.”

In Red Deer, the free display will start at 11 p.m. from the Capstone area, which should make it visible from many parts of the city.

Road and trail closures

To accommodate the fireworks, temporary trail and road closures will be in place:

  • 47/45 Street in Capstone – no vehicle access from approximately 9 p.m. until the fireworks are over.
  • The River Walk trail from the Taylor Bridge to 45 Street will be closed at approximately 10:30 p.m. July 9, and will reopened after the fireworks are over.
  • Fencing will be installed in the area between the Taylor Bridge and 47 Street; as a result the path along 47 Street will be closed July 8 and 9.
  • There will be very limited parking at Bower Ponds and Capstone.

“The Calgary Stampede is leading the way in the return to community life in our province. Red Deer is honoured to be a part of this initiative to celebrate our Western heritage together,” says Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer. “Albertans have been hit hard by the pandemic, but together we can rebuild and demonstrate our resilience on July 9.”

The fireworks will also be televised on CTV Calgary.

The Calgary Stampede is set to run July 9-18. More details on the fireworks are here.
