New Consultant Contract

WCPS launches new Grade 9-12 Blackfalds school boundary review

Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) Board of Trustees have approved a contract to perform a new Grade 9-12 Blackfalds school boundary and grade configuration review.

The review will be led by Deborah Schlag and Carol Bruinemen and will examine the school boundaries and grade configuration of WCPS’ Blackfalds and Lacombe schools.

District officials say the new contract comes as a new school is planned and in development for Blackfalds, in addition to recent analysis of current utilization rates of current Wolf Creek schools in Blackfalds.

“With our partners at Alberta Education, we have begun analysing our utilization rates in our schools in Blackfalds, the impact a new school will have, and how growth trends in the region will also impact our capital plans in the community in the years to come. Given all these factors, the Board felt it prudent to reach out and hear the voice of the community as we move forward,” explained Jayson Lovell, WCPS Superintendent, in a press release.

“As we continue with the plans and eventual construction of the new school for Blackfalds, anticipated to open September 2024, there are a number of things that the school division will be looking to the community for in terms of feedback and input. The consultants the Board has retained have extensive experience and a comprehensive review planned, that includes broad community engagement.”

Wolf Creek currently has three schools in Blackfalds: Iron Ridge Elementary (Grades PreK – 3), Iron Ridge Intermediate (Grades 4-6), and Iron Ridge Junior (Grades 7-9).

Lacombe schools are part of the review, as currently Blackfalds students attend Lacombe for high school.
