Ponoka Aquaplex reopens Monday with restrictions

Jun 11, 2021 | 1:06 PM

With the launch of Stage 2 of Alberta’s ‘Open for Summer Plan’, the Ponoka Aquaplex is reopening on Monday, June 14 for small-group swim lessons, pre-booked family and lane swims, private and semi-private lessons and private facility rentals.

“We’re excited to once again invite the public back to our newly refurbished facility. We look forward to being able to return to full programming and our regular schedule at the Aquaplex once Alberta enters Stage 3 of the ‘Open for Summer Plan’,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities.

Swimming Lessons

Beginning next week, swimming lessons that were cancelled in April when the facility had to temporarily close due to provincial health restrictions have been rescheduled to resume. New bookings for swimming lesson will be available once the Aquaplex is able to fully reopen under Stage 3 of Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan.

Half-hour private and semi-private lessons are also available.

Please Book in Advance

All lane swims, family swims and facility rentals must be booked in advance by phoning 403-783-0131. Aquaplex memberships will be reactivated and can be used to pay for lane swims and family swims. Only family members from the same household can book a family swim together, and only two families are able to book family swims at the same time to maintain three-metre distancing requirements.

The hot tub, wading pool, rope and diving board will be available for use, however they can only be used by one family or individual at a time under the direction of the lifeguard on duty. To view the Aquaplex pool schedule and rates, please visit town website.

Private facility rentals are still reduced in price from $110 per hour to $46 to encourage more families to use the Aquaplex. Only guests living in the same household are permitted to share a private booking.

Babysitting Course on June 26

Registration is open for a Babysitting Course being held at the Aquaplex on June 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for youth aged 11 years or older. The cost is $63. Participants should bring a lunch, water bottle and a stuffed animal or a doll that will be used to practise skills being taught during the course.

Additional COVID-19 Measures

To help protect the health and safety of visitors and Aquaplex staff, the following additional COVID-19 safety measures will be in place to help prevent the spread of the virus:

– Swimmers are asked to arrive no more than five minutes before their scheduled times;

– Guests are required to come dressed for swimming as change room and locker access will not be available prior to using the pools;

– Swimmers will be required to have a soapy shower on the pool deck before entering the pools;

– Occupancy limits will be in place for the pools and deck, along with one-way traffic flow measures for the lobby and pool deck;

– There will be time-limited access to change rooms upon leaving the pools and blow dryers are not permitted;

– Facility users will be required to use available hand sanitizer upon entering the building and follow physical distancing requirements;

– Aquaplex users must sign in at reception to ensure contact information is available for notification purposes should an outbreak occur; and

– Visitors at Town facilities are urged to stay home if they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat or shortness of breath; if they have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days; or if they have been in close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19.
