The search for a missing swimmer on the McLeod River northeast of Edson has sadly, ended tragically.

On the evening of June 6, Edson RCMP’s search for a missing 32-year-old male swimmer that had been swept down the McLeod River (A.K.A Lost Creek) on June 2, resulted in locating him deceased approximately 3 km down the river in a remote area of the river.

Mounties thank all area Search and Rescue teams for their assistance during the searches.

Those searches began on June 2 at 2:05 p.m., when Edson RCMP received a call of a swimmer that was swept down the McLeod River near the bridge off Highway 32.

The man from Niton Junction, AB, was last seen swimming in the area of the bridge off Highway 32 before being swept away. Police say a number of individuals also in the area attempted to rescue the swimmer; however, were unsuccessful.

Edson RCMP, along with the RCMP helicopter, an Alberta Agriculture helicopter, the Edson RCMP boat, Yellowhead County Fire Department, Hinton Search and Rescue, Drayton Valley Search and Rescue and Whitecourt Search and Rescue had continued efforts to locate the missing male late into the evening of June 2. Efforts resumed on June 3 and concluded on June 6.

Mounties say no further updates will be provided.
