ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting west of Edmonton

Jun 5, 2021 | 9:40 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an officer-involved shooting west of Edmonton.

It was minutes after noon Saturday when a west division patrol member with Edmonton Police Service was responding a recovered stolen vehicle and trailer call.

It was said the suspects were still on scene at a property near 218 Street and Stony Plain Road.

As the EPS cruiser approached the stolen vehicle, said vehicle rammed the EPS cruiser. It then fled from police at a high rate of speed, travelling west of the city.

An unmarked EPS vehicle began following the suspect vehicle as it slowed down on Hwy 16A.

At one point, a ‘Critical Alert’ was issued by the Alberta Emergency Alert system, stating that there were, “two armed and dangerous individuals west of Edmonton in Parkland County.” Nearby residents were told to shelter in place.

The suspect vehicle then turned west on Secondary Grid Road 628 near Enoch, where it came to a stop. It’s alleged this is when the suspected exited the vehicle and shots were exchanged between them and an EPS member.

The suspects reportedly then re-entered the stolen vehicle and fled westbound on Secondary Road 628, before eventually rolling the vehicle into a ditch. Suspects then fled the scene on foot and into a nearby farmer’s field, police say.

EPS and RCMP partners deployed various resources to the scene, including drones and Air 1, eventually locating the two suspects hiding in a treed area. The pair surrendered and were taken into custody.

No officers were injured during the incident. One suspect was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The second suspect was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Names of the accused and their charges will be shared once they have been sworn before the courts.

Otherwise, EPS will not be making further comment as the investigation is now in the hands of ASIRT.
