Potential for severe weather

Jun 4, 2021 | 12:45 PM

Severe Thunderstorm Watches have been issued for many parts of central Alberta this afternoon.

Watch areas include Red Deer, Innisfail, Ponoka, and Stetttler, among others throughout the region.

Meteorologists with Environment and Climate Change Canada say conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the central and northern foothills this afternoon and track eastwards through the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. A few of these thunderstorms are likely to become severe.

Officials note that large hail can damage property and cause injury, adding that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
