Caught In The Act

Red Deer man charged following lease site break in near Sundre

A Red Deer man is facing several charges after central Alberta Mounties foiled a break and enter at a rural lease site near Sundre last month.

On Apr. 28, at 2:00 a.m., Sundre RCMP were conducting patrols of rural lease sites when one of the officers observed an alleged break and enter in progress. The officer is said to have activated the police vehicle’s emergency equipment and attempted to stop the two suspect vehicles.

Both vehicles, however, failed to stop and drove through the fence of the compound and headed into a wooded area. RCMP say the vehicles then drove through a livestock fence onto a range road. Police followed the tracks on foot to an Off Highway Vehicle trail where the vehicles were abandoned.

Mounties says their investigation revealed that the vehicles were stolen and several thousand dollars’ worth of tools and copper wire were stolen from the surrounding area and were located inside the vehicles.

Red Deer Police Dog Service tracked the suspects for several kilometers and located one of the suspects who was apprehended without incident.

With assistance of Olds RCMP and Didsbury RCMP, Dean Johnstone, 50, of Red Deer, was charged with two counts of break and enter, two counts of possession of property obtained over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, flight from a peace officer, mischief under $5000, and possession of break–in instruments.

Johnstone was released on a recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Didsbury provincial court on June 7, 2021.
