Wildfire near Tomahawk ‘being held’

May 11, 2021 | 11:15 AM

A large wildfire burning near the hamlet of Tomahawk northeast of Drayton Valley is now being held.

An updated alert from the province says the wildfire burning near Highway 22 and Range Road 63 and between Township Road 510 and 524 is 65 per cent contained and not spreading.

The fire remains at 2,220 hectares in size.

Officials say if the fire conditions change another alert will be issued.

The wildfire broke out Friday afternoon and forced the evacuation of some nearby residents over the weekend.

Crews have been attacking the wildfire on the ground with fire breaks while air crews have dumped thousands of litres of water on the blaze. Rain over the weekend also helped their cause.

Environment Canada issued an air quality advisory Tuesday morning due to smoke billowing from the wildfire.

While a local state of emergency remains in effect, the Alberta emergency alert for the wildfire ended as of 10:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Road traffic remains restricted to locals only.

Anyone living in the area needing non-urgent assistance can call 780-203-3258.
