Red Deer spikes from 733 to 798 active cases

Red Deer added 109 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, for a pandemic total of 4,489.

With recoveries increasing by 44 to 3,655, the active caseload is up over the last day from 733 to 798.

That total is an all-time record which Red Deer has been setting over and over each day since April 24. In fact, active cases have been rising in the city each day since April 7 when there were 202.

The city’s rate of active cases per 100,000 people is now 750, or 14th highest in the province.

There have been 36 deaths in the city, none of which were reported today.

Alberta added 1,731 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, snapping a two-day streak of over 2,000 daily cases, including an all-time high of 2,433 on Saturday. Today’s positivity rate is ~10.4 per cent and 16,567 tests completed. That positivity rate is about 1.5 per cent lower than yesterday.

Overall active cases now total 22,920, up 416, another all-time high.

Three additional COVID-19-linked deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 2,086. Available details are as follows:

· Date of death: 4/30/2021. A female in her 80s in the Calgary zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: 4/30/2021. A male in his 60s in the Calgary zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: 5/1/2021. A male in his 40s in the South zone. The case included comorbidities.

There are now 648 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up two from Saturday, including 155 in intensive care, up three.

Alberta has administered 1,621,306 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of May 1, up 23,640 over the last 24-hour reporting period. That’s also ~10,000 less than the weekly average from April 24-May 1. A total of 300,755 Albertans are fully immunized, up 826.

VARIANTS

Of all active cases, 14,215 are variants of concern, up 229. Variants make up 62 per cent of Alberta’s active cases,. Variants have also caused 88 deaths, up two.

Of today’s 1,731 new cases, 1,132 are variants of concern.

The Central Zone has 2,677 active cases as of Sunday, a one-day increase of 135. There are 53 hospitalizations, up two, and nine people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has had 135 deaths as a result of COVID-19, with none reported today.

Clearview Public Schools also announced Sunday that all students in grade 7 at William E. Hay Stettler Secondary Campus are moving to online learning until May 17. The decision follows one additional confirmed case of COVID-19 who was present in the school from April 26-28. The school is currently on outbreak status, meaning it has between 5-9 active cases.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, will give her next update after the weekend.
