Rebels start final weekend of season tonight versus Calgary

The Red Deer Rebels begin the final week of their WHL season starting tonight at home versus the Calgary Hitmen.

The Rebels return to action following a bye last weekend. Their last game on April 19 resulted in a 3-2 road loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Rookie netminder Chase Coward made 32 saves in his first start of the season for Red Deer while Dallon Melin and Chris Douglas scored in the loss.

Red Deer is 2-15-2-0 on the season and has dropped 12 straight coming into Thursday’s game versus Calgary. The Hitmen are 8-7-2-0 on the year and took two of three games last weekend versus Lethbridge.

Red Deer and Calgary last met 54 days ago on March 6 when Arshdeep Bains scored in overtime to give the Rebels a 3-2 win. One night earlier, on March 5, Brayden Peters made 27 saves in a 2-0 win for the Hitmen in Calgary.

Tonight marks the start of four games in six days for the Rebels to finish the year, including three versus Calgary. The Rebels and Hitmen will meet again Sunday at 4 p.m. in Calgary and Tuesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in Red Deer.

The Rebels also host the Edmonton Oil Kings this Saturday at 7 p.m.
