A third Red Deer high school has moved to online learning due to COVID-19 following news that that Hunting Hills High School is doing so starting Tuesday.

Red Deer Public Schools said in a release Monday evening that Hunting Hills has had 12 cases of COVID-19 since April 16, leading to 570 students and 21 staff in self-isolation.

The switch to online learning approved by Alberta Education applies for all students in Grades 9 to 12. It’s expected they’ll resume in-person learning on Monday, May 10.

“Our request to move to temporary online learning was made for the best interests of our students and staff at Hunting Hills. By moving to temporary online learning, all students and staff will have equal access to learning, thus avoiding gaps with students coming and going,” district officials said in their release.

“Given the increase in cases across our community, we urge all our students and families to be even more vigilant in following health restrictions for COVID-19. It is through our combined efforts that we will be able to get back to ‘normal’ as soon as possible.”

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School moved to online learning starting Monday after 487 students and staff were isolating due to nine recent COVID cases at the school.

Students at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School (Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools) are expected to resume in-person learning next Monday, May 3.
