Drayton Valley Thunder drop pair to Spruce Grove

The Drayton Valley Thunder ended up both of their AJHL games this past weekend to the Spruce Grove Saints by scores of 4-2.

Friday night in Spruce Grove, Dexton Mozell made it 1-0 for the Thunder 7:07 into the game. Spruce Grove’s Jayden Davis tied it at the 12:14 mark.

Mason Marcellus gave a 2-1 lead to the Thunder at the 5:07 of the second period before the Saints came marching back in the third.

It would start with Brophy Dunne scoring a powerplay goal at 5:57. Almost five minutes later, Sam Vincent would give the Saints a 3-2 lead. The Saints made it 4-2 on a powerplay goal from Brett Pfoh.

Dylan Price brought Drayton Valley within 4-2 late in the third but that was a close as they would get.

Sunday’s game started similar to Friday’s, with the Thunder scoring early and the Saints tying the game. Daniel Kernaghan scored at 4:57 for the Thunder, followed by Kye Whillans for the Saints at 7:19.

Grayson Reid scored at 12:57 of the second to give Drayton valley the lead. Luigi Benincasa and McKay Hayes would score at 13:54 and 17:32 to put Spruce Grove ahead 3-2.

The 16:19 mark of the third period when a powerplay goal for Graham Gamache made it 4-2 for the Saints. The Thunder got a powerplay from Price that made it 4-2 with 27 seconds left in the game.

The 5-7-0 Drayton Valley Thunder will do battle once again with 7-7-0 Saints on Friday, April 23 at home (7 p.m.) and Saturday, April 24 in Spruce Grove (7 p.m.).
