Wolf Creek Public Schools opts out of curriculum pilot

Apr 14, 2021 | 10:28 AM

Wolf Creek Public Schools says that after considerable thought and review, it will not be participating in the pilot program of Alberta’s draft K-6 curriculum for the 2021-22 school year.

Piloting of this new curriculum, which was released last month, is voluntary for school authorities in Alberta.

Critics have taken issue with several aspects of the draft curriculum since its release last month, including social studies, religion and indigenous history components.

The division says it had concerns around the timing of the draft K-6 curriculum release.

Wolf Creek says they also want to ensure learner outcomes are developmentally age appropriate, that content reflects research-based 21st century learner outcomes – including a balance of critical thinking and knowledge-based learning opportunities, and that there is “adequate representation of foundational knowledge and understanding relating to Indigenous people throughout the grade levels.”

“For the time being, our focus remains on student and staff well-being during a time where continuity of learning and recovery from the pandemic is paramount,” said Superintendent Jayson Lovell. “When appropriate, WCPS staff will be supported and encouraged to participate in various in-district and provincial professional development opportunities to assist our teachers in preparing for the new curriculum in its final form.”

Several districts across the province have also announced they won’t be piloting the new curriculum, including the Calgary Board of Education, Edmonton Public, Edmonton Catholic, Medicine Hat Public, Medicine Hat Catholic, Lethbridge Public and Wild Rose Public Schools.

Red Deer Public Schools and Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools have yet to announce whether they’ll pilot the curriculum.

Chinook’s Edge School Division has yet to make a decision but says they are looking into a number of concerns they have received regarding the proposed curriculum.
