Olds Grizzlys losing streak reaches four games

Mar 30, 2021 | 10:09 AM

The Olds Grizzlys are still seeking their first win since returning to AJHL action this month.

This after the Grizzlys fell 3-1 to the Drumheller Dragons on Friday and 4-2 to the Camrose Kodiaks on Saturday.

Friday’s game started well enough for Olds with two goalless periods before Drumheller’s Ben Christian opened the scoring 7:43 into the third.

Kent Anderson made it 2-0 at 9:20 before Trenton Curtis gave Olds some life as he made it 2-1 at 16:43.

But Luke Fennig would add an insurance goal for Olds with 35 seconds left in the game.

Garret Fuller made 26 saves in net for the Dragons while Ty Marcinkowski of the Grizzlys turned aside 31 shots.

Saturday afternoon, Olds had a strong start but couldn’t hold off a third period surge from the Kodiaks.

Curtis netted his second goal of the weekend, giving the Grizzlys the lead 1:51 into period two. Stephen Rosier would then expand the Grizzlys lead at 15:32.

The Kodiaks would capitalize on a powerplay goal with 35 seconds left in the second. Then just 57 seconds into the third period, Cal Caragata tied the game at two.

It was all Kodiaks after that. Kyle Wallace scored the game-winne at the 6:14 mark, and Lucas Eagle would score into an empty net with 13 seconds left to seal the victory for Camrose.

Kodiaks goalie Logan Willcott made 23 saves while Tristan Martin had a busy game with 39 saves for the Grizzlys.

Olds fell to 1-5-1 on the season.

The Grizzlys host Drumheller on Good Friday at the Olds Sportsplex (7 p.m.). On Saturday, they take their show on the road to Encana Arena in Camrose to take on the Kodiaks (4 p.m.).
