Young people at the start of their careers are one of Capstone’s key demographics
Curiosity welcomes Cap Citizens

Get to know the people of Capstone

When you build a community for more than 5,000 people, how do you make sure each one of them feels unique—while feeling part of something bigger? You understand them, really get to know them. You study them; their likes, dislikes, needs, desires—you get to know them better than you know yourself. After all, any place is only as good as the people who live, work and play there.

Well begun is half done

And when it came to building a master-planned community like Capstone—a walkable riverside community that’s close to the city’s Historic Downtown and envisioned for those who love its open spaces and nature, its gathering places and its people—that’s exactly what The City of Red Deer did. Things kicked off with a comprehensive research project to define who the potential community members would be, as this would influence how developers would communicate to them, and the way the community would be brought to life. Research consultants Stone Olafson surveyed potential residents from the region and around the province and found that a full 55% of Red Deerians and Central Albertans surveyed said Capstone was an ideal place to live or that they would consider it, while an additional 27% said they’d visit the community often or occasionally.

Meet the Cap Citizens

What was most interesting were the two seemingly disparate groups who said they’d be most likely to call Capstone home; on the one hand, there were young people at the start of their careers, and on the other, active retirees. Together, they defined the essence of the Cap Citizen—social people engaged with community, active people who love nature, enthusiastic people with an affinity for culture. The one trait they share? Curiosity. The potential Cap Citizen is an inquisitive learner who likes to explore and try new things, wants to learn about nature, would like to explore active lifestyles, and would even love to look behind the curtain at the symphony!

Cap Citizens are socially-engaged, active people

Real places for real people

It’s for these Cap Citizens that The City of Red Deer collaborated with acclaimed planning firm Gehl to design a people-first, human-scale community. Every part of the development is carefully planned to enhance the connections between Capstone, its neighbours, the Red Deer River and downtown, make public spaces a focus, enliven streets, and weave residential areas throughout to create a cohesive and innovative community fabric. Capstone will be rooted in nature and embraced by culture—a community of condominium homes for people who like their green space and for social people who like their neighbours and city life. Residents will be able to hike over 100 kilometers of trails, and enjoy the sights and sounds of sunsets over the river. They can follow art walks that go from downtown to the riverfront, join a book club, take a seat for a dance performance or music recital. No matter what their passion, Capstone will be a place where every interest finds a home.

The new Canada 150 Square, located along Riverwalk in Capstone

A place to live, and to gather

Things are already moving quickly in Capstone—the community boasts a newly-expanded Riverwalk, which has become a major recreational destination and connection to more than 100 kilometers of trails throughout the city. There are already some 120 shops and services in Capstone! A major public square and a Green Spine that makes park space, ponds and picnic areas the backbone of the community. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; when it’s fully built out, there will be some 2,000 condominium residences in Capstone and about 5,000 neighbours in the community, along with convenient commercial and office spaces—and it’s adjacent to one of Red Deer’s biggest projects, the Red Deer Regional Hospital Expansion, in which over $100 million has been committed. With the announcement of the neighbourhood’s first private equity investment—the Capstone Park development by Calgary’s Brad Remington Homes—Capstone is on track to be a vibrant, healthy, inclusive and passionately optimistic community that’s connected to new ideas and explores fresh ways of living, catering to a new generation of Cap Citizens.
