Three games, three days

Rebels confident ahead of weekend series with Lethbridge

Having broken through for their first win of the season, the Red Deer Rebels are hoping to ride a wave of confidence into their first three-game weekend of the WHL season.

The Rebels climbed into the win column in their fourth game of the season with a 3-2 overtime triumph over the Calgary Hitmen last Saturday at the Westerner Park Centrium.

“That was pretty cool. It was just good to get the first one out of the way,” said veteran forward Arshdeep Bains, who played the role of overtime hero..

The Rebels played well at times during their previous three games but also faulted during key stretches on their way to a 0-2-1 start.

“We really needed that win,” admitted Rebels Assistant Coach Ryan Colville. “We have been playing pretty well and haven’t been rewarded for it. Getting that first win out of the way is nice gives us something to build off of.”

This weekend the Rebels take on a Lethbridge Hurricanes team that had last weekend off after two blowout losses to the high flying Edmonton Oil Kings on opening weekend.

“They are always a tough team to play against,” Colville said. “They play a hard physical game and I don’t expect anything different (this weekend). They have lost a few bigger name players, but they’re a hard-working team, and they still got a lot of skill there, so we have got to be ready to play.”

Five different players lead the Rebels with three points so far this season (Chris Douglas, Jayden Grubbe, Ben King, Chase Leslie and Kyle Masters).

Overage goalie Ethan Anders is off to a solid start for the Rebels with a 2.87 goals against average and .905 save percentage.

The Hurricanes enter 2021 without seven key players from last season, including Calen Addison and Dylan Cozens, both of whom made their NHL debuts this season. Lethbridge has eight rookies on their roster for this season.

Justin Hall and Jacob Boucher each have two points to start the year for the Hurricanes.

Lethbridge posted a 5-1-0-0 record against the Rebels in 2019-2020. The two teams will battle a total of six times this season.

The three-game weekend series between the Rebels and Hurricanes starts Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium at 7 p.m. They’ll battle Saturday at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge starting at 6 p.m. before they return to the Centrium for a 6 p.m. tilt on Sunday.

All Rebels games can be heard live on 106.7 REWIND Radio and streamed on CHL TV.
