Alberta adds 2 more COVID-19 deaths on anniversary of first case

Alberta added 411 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, and also marked one year since the first case of COVID-19 confirmed in the province.

The one-day total is out of 10,559 test results for a positivity rate of 3.9 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 4,639, an increase of 26. Recoveries are up 383 to a total of 128,644.

There are now 243 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down two from Thursday, including 44 in intensive care, down three.

Two additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,913.

As of Friday, there have been 563 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 32 over the past day, including 553 cases of the UK variant. There have been 117 variant cases in Central Zone, all of the UK version.

Alberta has administered 275,719 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 4.

Locally, the number of active cases in Red Deer continues trending downward and now sits at 313 as of Friday, a decrease of 49 over the past 24 hours. This marks the fourth straight day of falling numbers for Red Deer after several straight weeks of rises which saw the city hit a new peak of 574 active cases on Feb. 24.

The current active caseload of 313 is the lowest in Red Deer since there were 289 on Feb. 10.

There have now been 2,496 recoveries, an increase of 56 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by just seven to 2,838.

Alberta Health is reporting 53 active cases linked to the Olymel outbreak as of Friday, down from 69 yesterday, 460 recovered cases, an increase of 16, and three deaths out of 516 total cases, a number the same as yesterday.

The Central Zone has 527 active cases, down 18 from Thursday, and 35 hospitalizations, up five. Nine people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as yesterday. The zone has now had 115 COVID-related deaths, none of which were reported today.
