Virtual ride raising funds for hospital equipment

Mar 3, 2021 | 4:26 PM

Cyclists are coming together to raise funds for Red Deer Regional Hospital by doing a 12-hour virtual ride.

The 12 Hour Ride for Red Deer Hospital will take place on March 26, and is still looking for both donators and cyclists willing to participate.

“We’re more than happy to have more people jump on. It’s quite the community, the cycling world, and they’re all encouraging each other and they’re getting really excited for March 26,” says Travis Kuschminder with the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation.

The Foundation’s Operations Manager, Jason Ezeard, committed to a 24-hour ride over two days last year. This year they have a shorter period of time to ride, but Ezeard isn’t doing it alone as Foundation CEO Manon Therriault and 11 other people have jumped on to the cause.

The goal is to hit $10,000 and they’re over halfway there, sitting just over $6,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Funds raised from this virtual cycling fundraiser will go towards our hospitals greatest needs,” says Kuschminder.

“Not everything is funded by the government. Our hospital often has a list of equipment it would like to have to enhance healthcare in Central Alberta. So we take fundraisers like this one and will support the next project on the list so to speak. So that could be a new UCG machine, it could be a new ventilator, it all depends on what the demands of the hospital is needed at the time.”

The riders will be using the riding program Zwift to connect and track their distance and time.

If you’re interested in donating you can do so here.
