Ty Lund, who served six terms as MLA for Rocky Mountain House, died on Sunday at the age of 82.

Lund was born in Rocky Mountain House in 1938 and was a third generation family farmer outside of his lengthy political career that began in 1980 when he was elected as a councillor for the Municipal District of Clearwater.

After serving nine years on county council, including the final three as reeve, Lund made the jump to provincial politics and was elected in 1989 as the Progressive Conservative MLA for the Rocky Mountain House riding. He would win five more times after that and keep the seat for 23 years until 2012.

Lund was also a four-time cabinet member, serving at various points as the provincial minister for agriculture, environment, transportation and infrastructure, and government services.

Current Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA Jason Nixon shared his condolences Sunday on social media.

“The wisdom and advice he shared with me throughout the years continues to guide me in my own work as an MLA and Cabinet Minister,” Nixon said.

Rocky Mountain House Mayor Tammy Burke shared Nixon’s sentiment in describing Lund has having a genuine servant-heart.

Burke noted that she hadn’t worked directly with him as an elected official, but did get to know Lund while she was serving with the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, as it was known back then.

“He was genuine… he was keenly invested in the healthcare and health of our community.”

“I consider our community to have been blessed with Ty Lund’s tireless contributions to both our community and the countless Albertans his service benefited,” Clearwater County Reeve Cammie Laird commented.

“Ty was a true community builder and avid Alberta advocate.”

Premier Jason Kenney in a tweet described Lund as a “humble man with deep roots in farming, and a heart for public service.”
