Valentine’s day shooting at Maskwacis leaves one man in hospital, one in custody

Police say one man was sent to hospital and another is in custody following a shooting in Maskwacis that occurred on Valentine’s Day.

It was at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 when Maskwacis RCMP were dispatched to a residence within the Samson Cree Nation for a male who had been shot.

Police say they attended the residence where they located the male victim and began searching for the suspect who had fled from the area.

The victim was transported to hospital via STARS Ambulance for treatment and is now in stable condition, RCMP say in a release.

The Maskwacis General Investigative Section (GIS) and Red Deer Forensic Identification Services (FIS) are continuing the investigation into the shooting.

On Tuesday, February 23, police arrested Francis Edward Nepoose, 19, from Maskwacis in relation to this investigation and charged him with:

• Attempted murder with a firearm

• Discharge a firearm with intent

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Pointing a firearm

• Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose

• Fail to comply with a release order (x3)

Nepoose was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Wetaskiwin provincial court on Thursday, February 25.
