The Alberta legislature will reconvene this week with the tabling of Budget 2021 on Thursday.

According to provincial officials, there will be a focus on strengthening the health-care system to fight COVID-19 and creating jobs for economic recovery.

“Alberta’s government is laser-focused on protecting lives and livelihoods and that’s exactly what Albertans can expect from this legislative session,” says Premier Jason Kenney, in a press release. “I’m looking forward to debating the upcoming budget that supports the health-care system with historic investments while creating thousands of new jobs and laying the foundation for a strong economic recovery.”

The session begins Feb. 25 with the tabling of Budget 2021. It will break for the following week and then return for budget estimates, where MLAs will debate and scrutinize each department’s budget.

In addition to Budget 2021, Alberta’s government is expected to introduce legislation on MLA recall and citizens’ initiatives, support for Alberta non-profit organizations, and further protections from dangerous offenders and unprompted street checks during the spring 2021 sitting.

“I am proud to see Alberta’s government moving forward to fulfil key platform promises while at the same time protecting lives and livelihoods with investments in health care and the economy,” adds Jason Nixon, Government House Leader. “I am looking forward to a productive session with all my legislature colleagues as we work together for the people of Alberta.”

Officials say Alberta’s government caucus will work with the official Opposition to ensure that MLAs remain healthy and adhere to the best practices outlined by the chief medical officer of health.
