Blackfalds celebrates success of Lunch Box program

Feb 7, 2021 | 3:25 PM

The Town of Blackfalds and many community partners are celebrating the success of the local Lunch Box program.

It was announced last month the program would extend through 2021, and would also become available to all families with children aged 0-18.

The Blackfalds Lunch Box program is offered in partnership with Blackfalds Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), the Blackfalds Food Bank Society, and After the Grind. Since March 2020, it’s raised $107,432, enough to fund it for the remainder of this year.

“We want to acknowledge and thank all of our generous donors, both business and individuals who have contributed to this amazing program and who continue to provide support throughout this pandemic,” shared Sue Bornn, FCSS Manager. “The Lunch Box started at the end of March last year as a pandemic response program and will be serving the community for an entire year next month. We are grateful to continue to provide it to all families with children that live in Blackfalds.”

Many grant applications have been submitted to keep the program going, and the Town notes that council members are donating a $500 draw prize they won at last fall’s Alberta Urban Municipalities Association conference.

FCSS Staff say they’ve received nothing but positive feedback from program participants since it launched in 2020.

“Thank you so much for the Lunch Box program! It not only provides my kids with healthy lunches but also helped with breakfasts and helped boost positivity after the schools closed this spring,” stated an anonymous Lunch Box program user. “It helped us feel supported by our community and gave us something to look forward to every single week. I am beyond grateful for the help and to know that my family had not only this program but that volunteers in our community take the time each week to help us!”
