not so much for deciding for when to tighten

Expert says hospitalizations good way to determine when to ease restrictions

CALGARY – An expert says the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is a good way to determine when to ease restrictions.

But Dr. Christopher Mody with the University of Calgary says the same can’t be said for deciding for when to tighten the rules.

That’s because it can be weeks between when cases are identified and when people are sick enough to need a hospital.

Mody says if decision-makers wait until hospitalizations rise before acting, it’s too late.

Hospitalizations are the focus of Alberta’s plan to ease rules on some businesses and activities starting next week.

There are fewer than 600 COVID-19 patients in Alberta hospitals, so Premier Jason Kenney has said fitness centres, bars, restaurants and school sports will see relaxed measures.

More restrictions are to be eased, in increments of at least three weeks, if hospitalizations fall.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province’s top doctor, says she’ll be monitoring other factors in deciding whether it’s time to tighten the rules.

Those include new daily cases and test positivity rates.
