Trial booked for man accused of fleeing police in stolen vehicles

Jan 27, 2021 | 12:54 PM

Trial has been scheduled for a Ponoka man accused of fleeing from police using several stolen vehicles last summer.

It was about 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2020 when Bashaw RCMP were called after someone spotted a pick-up truck stolen out of Ponoka County.

Police were told the driver of the vehicle had apparently stolen a firearm and wallet from an unlocked vehicle in Camrose County.

The suspect travelled through several jurisdictions, abandoning the original stolen truck and stealing several other unlocked pick-ups, which police say had been left with keys in the ignition.

RCMP Air Services, Police Dog Services and the Emergency Response Team were called in to assist with the pursuit. Police lost track of the suspect when their helicopter had to stop to refuel and were unable to locate him again that day.

The suspect was eventually identified and arrested at his home on the evening of Aug. 26.

RCMP said they recovered a total of nine stolen vehicles involved in the incident.

Cody Alan Feil, who is 33, faces 36 charges relating to this incident and was also wanted on five outstanding warrants from various jurisdictions at the time of his arrest.

His trial in Stettler provincial court is scheduled for June 29-30, 2021.

In September 2018, Feil was sentenced to eight months in jail and given a three-year driving ban after being convicted in connection to an incident in Red Deer that June in which he rammed a stolen truck into a police cruiser.
