"Make Some Time"

RDC encourages activities and conversations about mental health

Jan 25, 2021 | 7:39 PM

RDC is encouraging learners, faculty, staff, and employees to participate in a range of activities and conversations about mental health from now until February 12 through RDC’s “Make Some Time” campaign.

This College initiative offers a supportive and engaging platform for individuals to explore healthy ways of managing stress and mental health. Offerings include a scavenger hunt, mindfulness meditation, yoga, and Movies for Mental Health that participants can experience virtually and individually.

“Campaigns that increase awareness about mental well-being are extremely valuable for post-secondary learners as they navigate through the multi-faceted demands of life as a student,” says Kylie Thomas, RDC Vice President Academic and Research. “These initiatives can be a catalyst to promote further conversations about managing mental health and fostering a supportive and inclusive community.”

Despite the cancellation of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season due to COVID-19, the Conference is encouraging RDC and the other 16 member institutions to participate in Make Some Noise for Mental Health from January 18 to 29.

This RBC-sponsored campaign promotes mental health awareness among student-athletes across the ACAC. Also endorsed by Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), this creative and impactful initiative has been prominent on RDC’s main campus in the past, but it has moved online for 2021 due to COVID-19.

Some of the virtual activities include mindful meditation, online fitness, a yoga class, and the ability to connect live with Olympians.

“In addition to these time specific campaigns, RDC offers a robust spectrum of resources and services to our learners throughout the entire year,” explains Thomas. “The College’s Counselling Services provides students with tools to help manage their mental health, including free counseling sessions, workshops, and information about anxiety, depression, stress, and self-care. Counselling Services also collaborates with RDC’s Students’ Association to help support and facilitate peer support programming.”
