Ferintosh farmer takes top honours at Manitoba Ag Days showcase

Jan 10, 2021 | 3:36 PM

A central Alberta farmer’s inventiveness secured more accolades this month at the Manitoba Ag Days Innovation Showcase.

Darcy Goossen of Ferintosh, a hamlet in Camrose County, already created the award-winning TireGrabber, a device which helps farmers safely change large-scale tires (up to 95 inches in diameter) on their own.

Now, he’s adapted it into the TireGrabber Reversible, which is what gained first place in the 2020 showcase’s farm safety category in Brandon. The reversible variant of his invention allows for safe changing of tire’s 34-89 inches in diameter.

The three-arm device balances the tire, centres it, and allows for safer and easier handling. It also enables the operator to flat-stack tires, decreasing the amount of warehouse space needed for storage.

“They’re just as great off the farm too – in sectors like construction, mining and aviation,” Goossen says, noting they attach easily to any hydraulic system. “Many of our customers have machinery that have different tire sizes, so they have been asking for more flexibility.”

In the end, the TireGrabber saves farmers money and time in addition to making it a safer process.

The product originally came to fruition after five years of research, development and testing, a release notes.

Goossen and the TireGrabber Reversible are now eligible to become the Manitoba show’s grand prize showcase champion and the farmer’s choice champion in an event that goes online Jan. 14. He and six other finalists — out of 44 entries — will answer questions from judges and participants.
