Red Deer sets active cases record after brief plateau

Red Deer hit a new record high for active cases of COVID-19 on Saturday with 434, a net increase of 16 once recoveries are taken into account.

The previous high was 425 on Dec. 13, but it had dipped back to 418 as of yesterday. The city added 42 new cases overall.

Meantime, Alberta is reporting 1,352 new cases, though with 1,673 recoveries, the active caseload dropped by 347 to 19,260.

While caseloads are trending positively, deaths continue to mount with Alberta adding 26 more since yesterday. That makes 81 over the last three days for a total of 841.

Hospitalizations rose by 18 to 777, and ICU admissions are up 10 to 151 province-wide.

There were 18,502 tests done in the last 24 hours for a positivity rate of 7.3 per cent.

Active cases around Central Zone

The Central Zone added 132 new cases on Saturday for a total of 5,204. Active cases dropped from 1,473 to 1,450.

Hospitalizations went from 75 to 73, and ICU admissions rose from five to eight (all of which are in Red Deer). There was one more death in the zone for a total of 31.

Red Deer County dropped from 99 to 97 active cases, while Sylvan Lake went to 28 from 33, a two-day net decrease of 10 active cases.

Lacombe County now has 45 active cases, down one, while the city of Lacombe’s active case count is at 26, the same as yesterday.

Ponoka County remains at 264 active cases and one deaths, with the town of Ponoka at 38 active cases.

Rocky Mountain House has 52 active cases, Rimbey has 17 and Drayton Valley has 47. Stettler and County has 19 and Three Hills/Hwy 21 has 28.
