City of Red Deer shares municipal impacts of new provincial health measures

The City of Red Deer has announced adjustments to its operations over the next several weeks due to the mandatory province-wide health restrictions announced by the Alberta government on Tuesday.

At 4:00 p.m. on Dec. 11, in-person customer service operations at the Recreation Centre will temporarily close. Friday will be the last day to make in-person payments and The City will work with the public to facilitate other forms of payment.

Online payment options through individual financial institutions and through MyCity continue to be an option.

In alignment with provincial measures, the following recreation and cultural facilities will temporarily close at the end of their business day on Dec. 12:

• Collicutt Centre
• G.H. Dawe Community Centre
• Recreation Centre
• Michener Aquatic Centre
• Servus Arena, Kinex Arena, Kinsmen Community Arenas
• All neighbourhood activity centres, including rentals
• Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery
• Festival Hall, Memorial Centre, and Cronquist House
• Intermediate School Site (Culture Services Centre)
• Leased spaces within City operated recreation and culture facilities including food vendors, retail stores, and private recreation providers will be closed. For questions about these providers, please contact them directly.
• The City is working with third-party operators to determine how the restrictions affect their operations. Please contact them directly for more information.

While the Government of Alberta indicated the restrictions will likely be in place until at least January 12, 2021 City of Red Deer facilities are anticipated to stay closed until Jan. 30, 2021.

Anyone with an Activity Reservation, monthly pass, registered program or facility booking will be contacted in the coming days to discuss options. For those who participate in organized activities within City facilities, please contact your local organizer for more information.

“As a City, we know the closure of these facilities significantly impacts our residents, but these closures are necessary to ensure we uphold all provincial orders and to do our part to reduce transmission of the virus locally,” said Allan Seabrooke, City Manager, in a release. “By extending the closure of our recreation facilities we can more efficiently re-open these facilities while also having greater flexibility to adapt to any new, additional or extended provincial restrictions that may be in place in January 2021.”

The following facilities and amenities remain open:

• Speed skating oval at Setters Place (for Activity Reservations only).
• Outdoor rinks
• Parks and trails
• Note, public health measures are in place for outdoor amenities, and include:
• No outdoor social gatherings; please enjoy these amenities with members of your household only.
• Physical distancing restrictions remain in place, and mask use is required when you cannot maintain 2 metres between your household and others
• A variety of pre-recorded fitness classes, led by City of Red Deer staff, can be found online here.

“While the Provincial list of things we cannot do is long, there are a number of activities citizens can still do to maintain their health and wellbeing over the coming weeks, which include, but are not limited to: enjoying our extensive trail system, visiting the light display in City Hall Park, skating at our many outdoor rinks, and supporting local businesses,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “We know these Provincial measures significantly impact community life, family life and the upcoming holidays, however, it is imperative that we each do everything we can to follow the public health orders and stop the spread of COVID-19 in our city to protect our local health care system.”

Additionally, a province-wide work from home order was issued for all workplaces, when physical presence is not required.

While many City of Red Deer employees are already working from home, City management will be reviewing operations to determine additional work from home arrangements.
