Red Deer adds eight active COVID-19 cases over weekend

The number of active COVID-19 cases is Red Deer is back up to 39, according to Monday’s online update from the province.

That ties for the highest number of active cases the city has had at any point during the pandemic. It’s also an increase of eight from the 31 active COVID-19 cases reported in Red Deer as of Friday.

Red Deer has now had 135 recoveries, an increase of six from Friday as the total number of cases in the city rose to 174, an increase of 14.

Red Deer Public Schools announced Monday morning that a case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual from Gateway Christian School. This brings the number of schools in Red Deer that have had confirmed cases of COVID-19 to nine.

“We are working closely with Alberta Health Services to ensure necessary measures are in place to protect all students,” district officials said.

Red Deer County has 10 active cases, three more than Friday. Sylvan Lake has gone from having no active cases as of Friday to having two as of Monday.

Lacombe County is down to six active cases and the city of Lacombe is down to one, down from seven and four, respectively.

Ponoka County has 45 active COVID-19 cases as of Monday, which is five more than Friday. With a case rate of 163.8 per 100,000 residents the county remains under a provincial COVID-19 watch. The majority of Ponoka County’s COVID-19 cases are in Mackwacis, where schools are closed for a third straight week in a bid to help prevent further spread of the virus. According to the Maskwacis Education Schools Commission, no cases have been reported at any of their 11 schools.

Elsewhere in the Central Zone, Rocky Mountain House (Clearwater County) now has three active cases. Both the County of Stettler and Mountain View County no longer have any active cases. The town of Olds has two and Kneehill County has five.

The Central Zone as a whole has 162 active cases as of Monday, an increase of 36 from Friday.

Alberta as a whole reported 1,440 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, including 364 cases confirmed on Friday (Oct. 23), a record 572 on Saturday and another 504 on Sunday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases across the province stands at 25,733. There are 3,138 4,477 active cases, up 826 from Friday, and 20,949 recovered cases, up 639.

There are currently 118 Albertans in hospital, 16 in ICU. There have been 307 deaths, an increase of seven from Friday.

The province conducted 58,183 tests in the past 72 hours – 16,367 on Oct. 23, 17,106 on Oct. 24 and 12,666 on Oct. 25.
