Two new schools in the Corridor will need names

Oct 23, 2020 | 3:07 PM

Now that the Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) is downsizing from having three schools in the Corridor to two, now comes the task of what to call them.

Two new schools are in the process of being built, a K-6 school in Condor and a replacement high school in Leslieville. Both are still currently in the design phase and on schedule, officials say.

Trustees will be meeting on Tuesday and will be discussing possible name changes for the new schools.

Superintendent Brad Volkman says school staff and parents did help name a replacement school in Drayton Valley after a committee was formed and a survey sent out to the community with several possible names for the board to choose from.

It will be proposed to the board that a similar committee be created by November 2020, consisting of six members – including two school administrators, two school council members and two staff members – from Condor Elementary School and David Thompson High School.

The committee would be tasked with gathering names for both schools from the community, review the suggested names, and chose the best 3 to be submitted to the Board.

The end goal would be to have all potential names brought to the Board before their May 18, 2021 meeting.
