MEDICINE HAT — There are now 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among a group of workers at Methanex in Medicine Hat.

The company says all 5 are from the same workgroup. They are now self-isolating along with anyone identified as a close contact of the workers.

The company first reported two confirmed cases among plant workers on Monday.

In a release, Methanex says the plant in Box Springs continues to operate with extensive COVID-19 safeguards and protocols in place.

These include:

  • Communications to workers about all health authority measures to prevent the spread
  • Site pre-access COVID-19 health screening for all workers, including reminding people to stay home if they are feeling unwell
  • Round the clock cleaning and disinfecting, including nightly fogging of buildings and wiping down/sanitizing all high-touch surfaces
  • An enhanced Close Contact Tracing process that includes requiring all workers to complete a daily close contact log even if they have had no close contacts
  • Robust hygiene measures, including hand sanitizer stations throughout the site
  • Mandatory surgical mask use and other personal protective equipment
  • Physical distancing at least 2 metres from people, wherever possible
  • Protective barriers to limit exposure between workers
  • Limiting the number of non-essential workers on site
  • Continuing to encourage workers to follow Alberta’s Health guidance to voluntarily get tested
  • Continuing to encourage workers to avoid carpooling with people outside of their household
