Wild Rose offering at-home learning option for some students this fall

Aug 12, 2020 | 10:52 AM

Wild Rose School Division will offer students going back to school in September a chance to continue At-Home Learning, but only for those with an underlying medical condition or other factors that could put them at risk.

An At-Home instruction registration form must be filled out by a parent for each child before the deadline of August 17.

Officials note that schooling from home will be different than what students are used to from the 2019-20 year, which was limited to teaching the essentials.

In the 2020-21 year, the curriculum will be far more intense as schools will once again be covering the entirety of the Alberta education curriculum.

If a student were to enroll in the at home learning they will have to continue to do so until at least November 16 if a parent wanted to put their child back into In-School Learning.

If a student wanted to then go back to At-Home Learning, a parent must give at least 2 weeks’ notice to re-enroll them into the home program.

The previous at home schooling was never deemed homeschooling or home education, but instead a “teacher directed at home program,” with only essential pieces of the curriculum being taught.

With the At-Home Learning the schools will be responsible for the student’s education and delivering of the program.

Besides this and In-School Learning, the Wild Rose School Division also offers Home Education.

If a parent were to take the third option of teaching from home themselves, they would be responsible for developing and educating their child with only some oversight from the School Division.
