Alberta RCMP prioritizes traffic safety during Heritage Day long weekend

Thousands of tickets and hundreds of warnings were issued to motorists throughout the province over the Heritage Day long weekend.

According to Alberta RCMP, members conducted enforcement initiatives focused on promoting traffic safety.

Between July 31 and August 3, a total of 2559 traffic tickets and 420 warnings were issued in Alberta.

Overall, 1972 individuals were ticketed for speeding, 34 individuals were charged with impaired driving, and six motorists received roadside suspensions.

This year, RCMP recorded 26 per cent more roadway offences compared to Heritage Day long weekend 2019.

RCMP also charged 10 motorists with travelling at excessive speeds (51 km/h or more over the posted limited).

• On July 31, near Brooks, a motorist was stopped for travelling on Highway 1 at a speed of 195 km/h in a 110 km/h zone.
• On August 2, near Lake Louise, a motorist was stopped for travelling at a speed of 152 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. A toddler in the vehicle was also found to be improperly secured in a five-point harness car seat. Officers educated the driver on the proper five-point harness fastening.

Thanks to the work of RCMP this past weekend, Mounties say Albertans were able to safely celebrate the summer holiday both on and off the roads.
