Stage 2 Relaunch

Recreation, arts and culture activities ramping up in Whitecourt

With the Government of Alberta’s Stage 2 Relaunch underway, the Town of Whitecourt’s Recreation, Arts & Culture team says it’s been able to increase services and programming opportunities available to local residents.

Town council heard this week that it’s been an exciting time of re-opening and developing new ways to connect, communicate and deliver as many options as possible while operating within the guidelines provided by Alberta Health.

While many residents have been making their way back to the Allan & Jean Millar Centre after re-opening, officials note there are still many who are not yet comfortable in public spaces. Therefore the town continues to offer things like workout and fitness classes outdoors and on Facebook, at-home family challenges and activities and virtual fun runs.

The SemCAMS Midstream Aquatic Centre re-opened on July 5 with a small reduction in hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and on weekends.

The Rotary Unplugged Summer Camp is now running morning and afternoon sessions for kids ages 6 – 11 years, with an average of 14 kids registered per session.

Future events on tap for Whitecourt include Drive-In Movie nights, in partnership with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), on August 26 and 27 in the Graham Acres parking lot.

The Whitecourt Art Fostering Program is a two phase initiative to increase arts and culture opportunities in the community and is slated to launch next spring.

The town also looking into the possibility of hosting a live comedy show at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre in September.
