Council to consider possible revisions to City’s public art policy
Red Deer city council had its first look at proposed policy and governance changes to the City’s public art program on Monday.
The public art review which began in 2019 includes changes recommended based on research conducted on other municipalities, as well as administration’s experience with the program which was first established in 1996 and last reviewed in 2010.
City officials say the public art policy is intended to ensure the incorporation of public art into the planning, design, and building of City capital projects. Currently, 1 per cent of a capital project’s budget is used for a public art piece, with that amount recommended to remain the same moving forward.
Recreation, Parks and Culture Manager Shelley Gagnon says there are three focus areas in the review, including the percentage allocation for public art, governance, and capital project thresholds and project eligibility.
