Innisfail becomes InnisHail during Sunday storm

Jul 12, 2020 | 3:45 PM

A foreboding thunderstorm watch for central Alberta was issued earlier than usual on Sunday morning, at around 8:30.

By noon, it was a warning and Environment Canada was advising residents in Red Deer and the surrounding area to watch out for toonie-sized hail.

While Red Deerians did get thunder and lightning as well as several minutes of intense pea-sized hail, it did not amount to what Innisfail received.

As of 3:45 p.m. Sunday, the region is still under a severe thunderstorm watch, with storms possible until late this evening.

According to Environment Canada, Innisfail received 26 mm of hail from the storm, while Spruce View got 30.
