Canada Day: What’s happening virtually for 2020 celebrations

Canada Day celebrations are drastically scaled down this year due to COVID-19.

In Red Deer, that means no gathering at Bower Ponds, typically hosted by the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society (RDCHS)

However, there are still ways to celebrate in your community to commemorate Canada Day in your own way.

Due to Great Chief Park still closed to public events, this year’s fireworks display will be shot from Westerner Park. The Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society is encouraging everyone to stay home and watch from their yards or streets, as gatherings of more than 200 people must not happen due to COVID-19.

There will be 233 free tickets, one ticket per vehicle, to enter the Westerner Park, these will be first come first served. This is a drive-in event and everyone must stay in their vehicles at all times, there will be no washrooms available or any food or beverages. No one will be allowed access to the park without a ticket.

Gates will open at 10:00 pm, the show starts at 11:00 p.m.

Tune into BIG105 (105.5FM) or 106.7 The Drive for special music timed to go with the fireworks!

July 1 – Get in the spirit of Canada Day by enjoying a driveway dinner, front yard BBQ or by getting take-out from a local restaurant.

Local entertainers will drive through the city from 5-7 p.m. with a collective singing of O’ Canada at 7 p.m.
