Discovery Canyon closed for rest of 2020

Jun 26, 2020 | 4:45 PM

Discovery Canyon will remain closed for the 2020 season.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post on Friday.

City staff met with River Bend Golf and Recreation Society and Alberta Health related to opening Discovery Canyon with Alberta Health identifying mitigation measures that could be taken to open the facility.

Because Discovery Canyon is a free amenity, officials say there are currently no controls in place to manage access in and out of the amenity that is likely to exceed the 100-person outdoor gathering limit on a regular basis should it open.

It was also determined that there are several areas of Discovery Canyon where maintaining two metres of physical distancing would be “extremely challenging.”

“In consultation with AB Health Services, it was recommended that if the amenity were to be opened this summer, it should be completely fenced to control access, have additional staff spread out down the lazy river to ensure physical distancing, have additional staff circulating throughout the park area to ensure physical distancing compliance, and limiting access to the lazy river to one person at a time with a certain time frame before the next person,” the announcement reads.

In addition, the washroom facility and tube rentals would also require additional cleaning to meet the guidelines.
