Celebrating great achievements

RDC takes grad celebrations online

Jun 5, 2020 | 10:31 AM

They don’t get to take the traditional walk across the stage to celebrate their achievements, but Red Deer College graduates are still being celebrated today.

RDC is celebrating its 56th Convocation online through its social media channels.

“There are 1,654 graduates from Red Deer College this year, and they have each succeeded in achieving an incredibly important, life-changing milestone with their graduation,” says Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President. “Nothing can take that away from them, not a pandemic and not the postponement of their Convocation ceremonies. That’s why we’re sharing congratulations through our social media platforms throughout June and especially June 5 – the originally scheduled Convocation day – to create a feeling of community and celebration for our graduates.”

Two outstanding students are being recognized for their exceptional contributions to academics and to the community.

Megan Nikula is receiving the Governor General’s Academic Medal (Collegiate Bronze Level) for her academic excellence. Nikula is graduating with a Kinesiology and Sport Studies Diploma, and she earned a GPA of 4.0 and five grades of A+ in the final year of her program.

Brittany Lausen is receiving the Red Deer College Foundation Outstanding Student Award for her leadership and commitment to RDC. Lausen has demonstrated extensive contributions as a student leader, serving as the President of the Students’ Association and being an integral part of a wide variety of initiatives for students across the College.

As well, RDC is once again granting an Honorary Degree to “an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of social, cultural or economic development in a way that has had significant impact on RDC, central Alberta and beyond.”

Dorothy Dickson is the sixth recipient of the Honorary Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree in recognition of her unparalleled passion for environmental initiatives, education and community building.

“It’s always meaningful to recognize award recipients as part of Convocation celebrations. Our student recipients have demonstrated excellence and achievements at the outset of their education and careers, and this is part of the foundation of success they will build upon throughout their lives,” says Nunoda. “Dorothy Dickson, our Honorary Degree recipient, has served as a community leader, educator and advocate for decades, and now – in her 90s – she continues to be passionate about her life’s work. She is an inspiration for all of our graduates and for all of us, as community members.”

This year’s RDC graduates will be invited to next year’s Convocation week celebrations, which are currently scheduled for the first week of June 2021.
