Brazeau County Council hears update on wetlands project, proposes second waste roundup initiative

Jun 5, 2020 | 1:17 PM

Brazeau County Council heard an update this week on the Brazeau County Floating Wetlands Pilot Study at Violet Grove.

Council received a presentation from Dr. Christopher Walker, Environmental Manager with Covey Associates, Associate Professor Terry Lucke with the University of the Sunshine Coast, Professor Mohamed Gamal El-Din with the University of Alberta, and Professor Anne Naeth with the University of Alberta, on the project’s progress.

The study looked at how constructed floating wetlands composed of two plant species treated the water in the waste stabilization pond.

The project has successfully proven the ability of the constructed floating wetlands to grow in a cold climate, and the study results are valuable as they provide data previously unavailable.

After the presentation, Council asked for a budget and a proposed plan for the continuation of the study going forward.

Also at the June 2 meeting, Brazeau County Council decided to hold a second Hazardous Waste Roundup later this summer, this time in the Breton area.

A roundup of hazardous waste materials is already planned to take place from June 9 to 13 at a single site on Industrial Road in Drayton Valley for Brazeau County residents only.

Council directed Administration to hold a second roundup in Breton that is tentatively scheduled for August. More information will be announced at a future date.
