RDC preparing to open revamped summer camps

Jun 1, 2020 | 2:26 PM

Red Deer College is getting ready to welcome its summer camp participants for a wide variety of learning and fun activities.

The camps will look a bit different this year, with a blend of online and in-person camps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Youth from across central Alberta and beyond will participate, beginning in early July, in camps in science, junior chefs, cooking, film, game design, animation, and sport.

“I am confident that our summer camp participants will enjoy a fun and engaging experience in these unique circumstances,” says Dr. Peter Nunoda, president of Red Deer College, in a release. “Our instructors are all excited to connect with our campers and ensure they receive the high-quality learning experiences they registered up for, along with ensuring everyone has fun with these summer activities.”

Game Design, 3-D Animation and the popular Film Camp will be taught online while still providing students valuable education opportunities and the ability to connect virtually with their classmates and teachers.

A range of cooking camps for students will also be offered in a virtual setting. From learning the cooking basics, to baking, preparing suppers and international cuisine, among others, participants are expected to be taught important skills and techniques in the kitchen while being supported by their peers and a knowledgeable instructor.

The cost for online camps has been reduced in some cases to assist families who may have to purchase some supplies, such as baking ingredients.

When it comes to RDC Science Camps, students will be able to choose between Biology and Chemistry-based camps that will be fully interactive with classroom simulated learning as well as backyard-friendly experiments.

Sseveral Series Summer Art School workshops will proceed for adults, although with a reduced number of available classes. Some courses will be taught online and others will be offered in-person on main campus.

Organizers determined that some sessions would be difficult to replicate online and will be offered in-person in carefully planned smaller classes. It’s noted that decisions were deliberately made when planning for Series and its format, ensuring valuable learning opportunities for participants, while adhering to provincial health and safety recommendations.

After discussions with partner organizations, Red Deer College has made the difficult decision to cancel its larger overnight youth camps, Artstrek and MusiCamp. The College understands the disappointment this decision will cause for its participants, and the College looks forward to welcoming all summer campers back to RDC next summer.

RDC Sports Camps will not be able to continue as originally planned for this summer, given current restrictions on recreation facilities and sports such as volleyball and basketball as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In their place, physical literacy camps for youth and physical fitness camps for teenagers have been designed and developed for safe and enjoyable on-campus participation. College officials say the health and safety of campers and instructors are of the utmost importance, and the sessions have been carefully designed as such.

Most of these camps will be held outside and in small groups to ensure adherence to physical distancing and other health directives. These camps will provide an important outlet for youth that will teach and develop physical literacy and fitness in accordance with government protocols.

For select in-person youth and adult summer camps and courses at RDC, enhanced cleaning protocols will be incorporated, and personal protective equipment will be accommodated as per guidelines by Alberta Health Services.

RDC has capped registration in all in-person summer courses to heed Alberta Health Services public gathering guidelines. There will be no more than 15 individuals in any given learning space. These smaller numbers are hoped to help limit the number of people on RDC’s main campus this summer, which will help to ensure the health and safety of all course participants and staff.

Individuals who have registered in RDC’s Summer Camps will be contacted to share additional details relating to specific arrangements for each of RDC’s summer camps.
