Red Deer-South MLA touts Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy

May 12, 2020 | 11:11 AM

I am excited to see Alberta’s Relaunch occur as soon as possible. Stage 1 of the Relaunch is scheduled for this week. Details of this strategy are found at www.alberta.ca/alberta-relaunch-strategy.aspx

Principles for a Success Relaunch

Albertans do not want Government micromanaging their lives with endless prescriptive do’s and don’ts. That limits freedom. To the extent possible, as Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health (“CMOH”) sets out the principles of safety in a simple, straightforward manner, Albertans should then be trusted to exercise common sense, as responsible adults, to take informed risks, in the application of those principles in daily living.

One such principle for a successful Relaunch is that businesses and organizations should be given the opportunity to apply the rules of safety if they have similar risk exposures and have similar capacities to reduce those exposures.

A Local Example

The CMOH approved drive-in theatre movie services for Albertans following safety principles.

One of our local churches wished to provide drive-in worship services, applying similar safety principles, with a CMOH official stating such services were supported only for “special events.”

Applying Proper Principles

I am grateful for faith leaders in our community bringing this issue to my attention. Working together with our CMOH, drive-in worship services can be hosted on a weekly basis as those services use similar safety principles as drive-in movie theatre services.

I look forward to attending this drive-in worship service this upcoming Sunday.

How Can we Support the Relaunch?

Red Deer has done an excellent job of reducing the spread of COVID-19.

One opportunity to help reduce the impact of any future, inadvertent spread, is by downloading the ABTraceTogether mobile app on your phone. I did – it is quick and easy. For more information, see www.alberta.ca/ab-trace-together.aspx

Some our local businesses were required by the CMOH to suspend operations. I am excited for more opportunities to support our local businesses and their employees as they Relaunch, such as visiting a favorite local restaurant, and invite all to do the same.

MLA, Red Deer-South
