STORMTROOPER ARREST

ASIRT to take a role in “Stormtrooper” arrest, once external service investigation is complete

LETHBRIDGE- A “Star Wars Day” incident in Lethbridge on May 4 has spawned further action.

A 19-year-old woman restaurant worker in a “Star Wars” stormtrooper costume carrying a plastic gun was forced to the ground and ended up with a bloody nose.

The Lethbridge Police Service says that after the Medicine Hat Police probe into the case is complete, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will check to make sure it was conducted “impartially, thoroughly and without bias.”

The restaurant owner says it would have been difficult for the woman who was wearing the costume to quickly comply with officers’ demands.

ASIRT’s role in a review, is to provide an objective, independent, critical examination and assessment of an investigation to confirm that it was properly conducted using best practices and ensure all appropriate investigative steps were taken. The process involves an ASIRT investigator, team commander, the Director of Investigations and ultimately the Executive Director to review the investigation.

Lethbridge police say once the review is complete, the file will be returned to them and may contain recommendations.
