Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, said Friday that an inmate at the Calgary Remand Centre has tested positive for COVID-19, the first such case in the province.

“This is in someone newly admitted, who was exposed before they arrived,” said Hinshaw.

The inmate reported feeling unwell the next night and was identified early, Hinshaw said. The inmate was admitted directly into a quarantine facility.

Both the inmate and a cellmate are now under isolation.
