#TakeoutDay

Local restaurants taking part in national TakeoutDay campaign

Apr 14, 2020 | 1:00 PM

Nearly a dozen Red Deer restaurants will be joining countless others across the country in what is being described as an historic move to save the food service industry in Canada.

Several hundred restaurant owners, chefs, culinary leaders and celebrities across Canada have joined forces to support Canada Takeout to make every Wednesday #TakeoutDay. The movement encourages Canadians to order from their favourite local restaurant offering takeout or delivery, with a nationwide kickoff happening Wednesday, April 15.

Red Deer restaurants known to be taking part include Burger King, Joey’s Seafood, Quiznos, Buster’s Pizza & Donair (Taylor Drive), Memphis Blues Barbeque House, OPA! (Taylor Plaza), Mohave Smokehouse & Bar, Famoso, The Canadian Brewhouse, Fatburger, and Ricky’s.

Canada’s Great Kitchen Party – Home Edition will host what is being billed as an “epic variety show” on Facebook live at 6:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday in partnership with Canada Takeout. It will feature musical entertainment from some of Canada’s top talent and celebrated athletes. Jim Cuddy, Alan Doyle, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall and Tom Cochrane are among the headliners confirmed. It’s hoped Canadians will enjoy dinner and a concert together virtually and do their part to help restaurants on #TakeoutDay.

Restaurants Canada estimates that 800,000 food service jobs have already been lost nationwide due to COVID-19. Officials estimate nearly one in 10 restaurants have already closed permanently, with many more in danger of closing by the end of April if conditions don’t improve. Food service sales are expected to be down nearly $20 billion for the second quarter of 2020.

Canadians are encouraged to share the #TakeoutDay campaign with family and friends across social media. You can click here to find out where to order.
